Hardwood Flooring Frequently Asked Questions :

How do I know if I need a Buff and Coat or if my wood floors need to be refinished?

It depends on several factors: Your floors condition, your expectations and your budget will help determine the best course of action. We would be happy to provide you with a free consultation to help you determine what actions to take.

Do you have a showroom?
We bring the showroom to you. There's no need to waste time wandering the aisles of your local big box store looking for an employee who may or may not have the answer… At Kingdom Hardwood floors we’ve got the experts waiting for you!

How long does it take to sand and finish a wood floor?
Most 400-700 square-foot jobs can be completed in two days. On the first day we complete sanding and apply one coat of sealer and one coat of polyurethane, on the second day we apply the final coat of polyurethane for a total of 3 coats of durable finish. There are several variables that could extend this time.

Will I have dust everywhere?
Our goal is to leave your home as clean as it was when we arrived. We use plastic to seal off areas in your home where we aren’t working, and when finished, vacuum all the dust and wipe everything down. Although sanding machines contain a majority of the dust, small levels do become airborne. We recommend removing all dust-sensitive items (e.g., computers, art, etc.) from the rooms being worked in to ensure they stay dust free.

When can I walk on the newly finished floors?
In general, most finishes we use are quick-dry and can be walked on within just a few hours. However, the curing time for wood floor finishes to reach full hardness is 2-4 weeks. The curing time depends on the temperature and relative humidity. It is important not to use any liquids, including water to clean the floor during the first three weeks.

When can I move the furniture back onto the floors?
We recommend waiting 48 hours before replacing furniture. If it has to be sooner, be sure to set items in place and not drag them across the floor. Rugs should be left off for a period of 2-3 weeks.

Why are there gaps between the boards?
Wood flooring expands and contracts based on the humidity level in your home. To minimize this situation, keep the humidity close to 50 percent. Use a humidifier during the dry winter season and run the air conditioner or a dehumidifier during periods of high humidity.

What does it mean to “acclimate” a hardwood floor?
Before installing new hardwood floors, an important first step is letting the wood get used to the conditions inside the house (temperature and humidity). This process is called acclimation of the hardwood. Proper wood acclimation is one of the key components to successfully installing hardwood floors. Not taking this factor into consideration before installing new floors can be a very expensive mistake.

To acclimate hardwood flooring, we move the packaged boards into the room where they will be installed and let them sit for several days. This allows the moisture content of the wood to adjust to the conditions in the room.

How do you fix pet stains or water damage in hardwood floors?
We can replace pet-stained boards or water damaged boards in your existing hardwood floor. After the board or boards are replaced, the area is sanded to a uniform flatness and a custom stain is mixed to match existing flooring.

What is the life expectancy of hardwood floors?
Hardwood flooring will last a lifetime if properly cared for. Isn't it nice to know that after you're done paying your mortgage, replacing your roof, water heater, gutters, appliances, and other home items you will still have your wood floors. Hardwood flooring also increases the value of your home and they can be sanded approximately 7 times with 15-20 years between each sanding.

We would be happy to answer any additional questions for you, please don't hesitate to ask.
